tutorial_travel_video_makingSince DSLRs and bridge photo cameras with large sensors are capable of recording high resolution video and since everyone can capture moving scenes with his smartphone a lot has changed – not only in the camcorder industry but also in the way self made videos look. In the last weeks I have edited some travel videos and watched hundreds of them on Vimeo. Here is what I have learned. A lot of it is influenced by the technological shift towards filmmaking with a photo camera.

VoD services: Ease of use still not where it should beZapping through Vod

Video-on-demand services like Netflix or Watchever offer a great variety of content. But even though I am subscribing to a VoD service I watch linear TV much more often. The main reason for me and for many other people struggling with VoD is the ease of use: When I watch TV I don’t have to browse through hundreds of movie covers first. I can start right away. The editors of the TV channels give me a recommendation of a single show to watch right now. I can test it for a while and when I don’t like it I can switch to the next channel and test the next recommendation. That’s really convenient. And I think video-on-demand services would profit in different ways from imitating this type of content discovery. Here is how…

disrupting-telcoSkype statt Telefon, Whatsapp statt SMS

Netflix GermanyNetflix about to expand in Europe

In the last weeks more and more hints can be found that the American video streaming service Netflix will enter the German market in the close future. The service is really successful in the US outperfoming HBO in subscriber numbers. But what will happen if they come to Germany? Which impact could the launch of Netflix Germany have on German TV producers and TV channels? In this articel I describe what I think is likely to happen.

Widespread approaches to estimate success of new TV shows

Much is at stake when it comes to new TV shows. The development costs are usually pretty high and so are the risks of ratings far below expectations – and subsequent the risk of burning money. Everyone involved in the development of the show is working hard to make it a hit instead of a flop. They do so by permanently estimating which option might have which impact on the ratings. The approaches, however, are widespread: (mehr …)

Art has always been a way of decribing the world. The range, however, is eclectic – from highly realistic to totally abstract, from emotional to clinical, from beautiful to nasty, from fictious to lifelike. A way many of us describe the world today are PowerPoint charts derived from numbers. Are those charts art? (mehr …)
